To get products to market faster or to meet aggressive product development schedules, many companies shorten the product planning process by jumping straight into the development of future products or enhancements. However, companies should not build products simply because they have the capability to do so. They must begin by discovering and understanding the user problems that they are trying to solve.

In many cases, the discovery process is conducted internally with a primary focus on ROI, resource availability and associated risks. Yet, the increasing speed of business change and higher customer expectations are forcing companies to re-think how they manage product portfolios.

There is widespread effort on the part of organizations to create online channels of communication and collaboration for ideation. In this environment, paradigms like “social innovation” and “crowdsourcing” have become critical to organizations in meeting strategic objectives. Merely getting the right ideas, however, does not guarantee success. Companies need to link business strategy with downstream execution in order to develop the right products for the right markets at the right time.
