Who would you like to hear from at this year's PDMA Annual Global Conference on Product Innovation Managment?

Let us know who you would like to hear from this year.  Do you have a favorite author or academic that you feel is an extraordinary speaker?  Or a corporation you'd love to find out just HOW THEY DO THINGS?

Last year, some of our speakers included:

  • Derek Yach , Senior Vice President of Global Health Policy - PepsiCo
  • Mohan Sawhney , McCormick Tribune Professor of Technology and Director, Center for Research in Technology Innovation - Kellogg School of Management and Author, "Collaborating with Customers to Create" and "The Global Brain"
  • Dan Pink, Business Guru and Best-selling Author of "DRIVE" and "A Whole New Mind"
  • Janet A. Carr , Senior Vice President, Strategy and Customer Engagement - Coach, Inc.
  • Chris Musso, Associate Principal, McKinsey & Company
  • John Tucker, Vice President and Chief Technical Officer - Kennametal, Inc .
  • Mauro Porcini, Head of Global Strategic Design, Consumer and Office Business, 3M
  • Yvonne Engelen, Director, DSM Venturing

Professor Rebecca Henderson at MIT

We've been hearing that Professor Rebecca Henderson from the Sloan School of Management at MIT would be fantastic! Her perspective on Developing and Managing a Successful Technology and Product Strategy is very compelling . She's the Eastman Kodak LFM Professor of Management.

Who has thoughts to share on either Rebecca as a keynote or the topic itself?

The Case for a Few Surprising Suggestions

Let me advocate for a couple of interesting options which might not seem directly related to product innovation, but could be riveting.

Dan and Cheap Heath - authors of Made to Stick and Switch.  Made to Stick is a brilliant book filled with lessons on how to communicate your idea in a compelling way so that it catches on.  I have not read Switch, but it is about change and I have heard it is excellent.  It could be very compelling to relate either topic to business, innovation, and management.  Plus, it's always fun when two brothers come as a package deal.

Jonah Lehrer - author of How We Decide, a book about the neuroscience behind decision-making.  Lehrer's book draws on examples from sports, philosophy, disasters and everything in between to illustrate his points.  His insights on risk-taking could be particularly relevant.

John Heilemann and Mark Halperin - authors of Game Change, a book on the 2008 presidential election.  This one may seem especially "out there," but bear with me.  It would be fascinating to have them speak on how the Obama campaign launched the most innovative political machine in history.  For example, the campaign's use of the internet and social media was revolutionary.

Anyone from the Administration/Government - in a similar vein to the above, It would be interesting to hear from a prominent person in the government sector talk about innovation, given the Presiden'ts focus on it in the State of the Union address.

Government

I think this is important to.  We tried to get Chopra last year, but the office declined.  I think we should push really hard for this.  If governemnt wants to stimulate the economy through innovation, they'd be negligent NOT to send someone IMHO :-) )

An alternative would be MA Gov Deval Patrick, who's done a lot to stiulate the MA technology based innovation program.

Government Follow Up

Thanks Geoff! I have an invite out to Chopra already. He is on my hot list and hope he can make the dates work. I can keep everyone posted on my progress. Of course, if there is anyone on the committee or otherwise who might have an "in" into Chopra's office - I would welcome that! Certainly these types of relationships can go a long way and PDMA could benefit by leveraging.Who else? Last year we had everyone vote on their must have keynotes. The names that came out on top were Dan Pink (2010 Keynote), Aneesh Chopra and Burt Rutan. Should we pursue Burt? I worked with him years ago on FEI and he was spectacular! Would love to learn more about what he's been up to lately.

Government Follow P

I think that Burt Rutan would be a very big "get" as his appeal stretches across multiple disciplines, and would simply Wow the audience with his experiences and insights.

Product Managers Desk Reference

Another individual that I've run across numerous times and have had some really engaging conversations with is new Product Management author Steven Haines. Steven has written the "Product Manager's Desk Reference" and is working on a second book “Winning Products: Organizing Your Company to Produce Innovative Products and Brands?” (McGraw-Hill, summer 2011).

Potential Speaker

I spoke recently with some people at Lux Research - and they might work. Lux does several things, one of which matches existing technology with the companies that are in need of that technology.

I'm sure they have insights into product acceleration and joint development. I'll let you know what I find out.
