Best practices in technology conversion

I am interested in learning how R&D-driven organizations are efficiently converting their technology investments into customer value. One would think from the hype that open innovation is the only story here.

The Difference Betwen Creativity and Innovation

Many people believe that creativity is synonymous with innovation.  In truth, creativity is just one component of innovation.  Inovation involves strategy, creativity, and implementation.  You cannot have innovation without creativity, but you can have creativity that never leads to innovation.

What NPD topics I have interest in

I would like to hear about other R&D groups and how they chose projects, how they got priorities.  Big firms can use powerful Portfolio and Project Management tools (Arena, Planview, CA, PowerSteering, etc) but what about small firms, small R&D department with very limited resources?  We have okay NPD stage-gate proceedure, but we are poor at comparing project proposals and deciding where to focus.  I would like to get feedback or guidance from some smaller groups that are having success.
